Description
The Student Chapter of the American Meteorological Society at Texas Tech University, along with KCBD News Channel 11, the National Weather Service, and the Science Spectrum, will be hosting Lubbock's annual Severe Weather Awareness Day on Saturday, March 23rd, from 10:00am to 4:00pm at the Science Spectrum & OMNI Theater. Activities will include hands-on weather experiments for kids of all ages, live weather science demonstrations with electricity and lightning simulators, information on severe weather preparedness, and door prizes. Storm Chasing and Emergency response vehicles, as well as weather instrumentation from Texas Tech’s Severe Storm Research Team will be on-site and available for all to see. Forecasters from the National Weather Service (NWS) office that serves the South Plains area will also be in attendance. They’ll have information about weather safety and preparedness, as well as how and when they issue severe weather Watches and Warnings, and what those mean to your family in creating a plan for severe weather preparedness. Additionally, the National Weather Service will be hosting “Open House Tours" of their offices located in the same building as the Science Spectrum. Sign-ups for these tours will be available at the event. The public is also invited to come out and meet several of the KCBD On-air Weather team for a weather-filled day of fun! Kids can take a turn in front of a green screen and see themselves on camera giving the weather forecast for the day. This is a *FREE event for the general public and will be located in the Science Spectrum's lobby and outside on its front entry area. For the Full Weather Experience see Tornado Alley in the OMNI Theater: Special OMNI Theater screenings of the film Tornado Alley will also be featured in celebration of the day’s events. Join Storm Chasers star Sean Casey and the researchers of VORTEX 2, the most ambitious effort ever made to understand the origins and evolution of tornadoes, on this heart-pounding science adventure. *Standard ticket rates apply for all OMNI Theater films and museum admission. Showtimes for Tornado Alley on Sat., March 23rd will be 11:30am, 2:15 & 4:45pm. General Admission Ticket Prices for OMNI films: $9.00 Adults $7.50 Seniors (60+) $7.50 Children (ages 3-12)
