Development Director

The Development Director leads Open Door’s fundraising and donor engagement work, with a strong focus on building and sustaining relationships with major donors, community partners, churches, businesses, and foundations. This role is responsible for helping grow philanthropic support, strengthening donor strategy, and ensuring development efforts are aligned with Open Door’s mission and organizational priorities.

This is a Director-level position that supervises the Community Engagement Coordinator and works closely with executive leadership, the board, finance, and program leaders. The Development Director will lead day-to-day development efforts while helping carry forward broader fundraising strategy and donor engagement across the organization.

Key Responsibilities

Donor Cultivation and Stewardship: Build, manage, and nurture relationships with individual donors, major gift prospects, foundations, churches, businesses, and community stakeholders to support long-term engagement and giving.

Major Giving: Manage a portfolio of current and prospective high-level donors, including donor meetings, cultivation plans, solicitations, stewardship, and follow-up.

Development Strategy: Develop and execute fundraising strategies in collaboration with executive leadership, including individual giving, corporate and foundation partnerships, planned giving, annual campaigns, donor retention, and the capital campaign.

Fundraising Events: Lead the planning and execution of large-scale fundraising events, sponsorship opportunities, donor gatherings, and event-related follow-up that strengthen donor relationships and generate support for Open Door’s mission.

Development Team Leadership: Lead the Community Engagement Coordinator in connecting volunteer involvement, tours, events, community partnerships, and public engagement with appropriate donor cultivation opportunities.

Reporting and Accountability: Track donor interactions, next steps, gifts, pledges, and fundraising activity in the donor database to support accurate reporting and alignment with organizational goals.

Organizational Collaboration: Work closely with executive leadership, finance, board members, and volunteers to support fundraising goals and strengthen development efforts.

Prepared for Development Work: Someone with experience building relationships, communicating clearly, and moving people toward shared goals. This may come from fundraising, sales, public speaking, nonprofit work, ministry, community engagement, business development, or another relationship-centered field.

Strategic and Organized: Able to manage a donor portfolio, track follow-up, prioritize opportunities, and contribute to a growing development strategy.

Technically Proficient: Familiar with CRM or donor management software and committed to accurate donor records and reporting.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, or equivalent professional experience in a relationship-centered field.
  • Experience building trust, managing relationships, and moving people toward shared goals through fundraising, sales, ministry, public speaking, nonprofit work, community engagement, business development, or a related field.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to connect with donors, partners, churches, businesses, community stakeholders, and internal teams.
  • Good judgment, follow-through, and organizational skills, including the ability to translate direction into clear priorities and coordinate work across departments.
  • Collaborative and proactive, with the ability to support team alignment, identify problems early, and work well in a dynamic environment.
  • Experience with donor cultivation, fundraising events, sponsorships, major gifts, community partnerships, or CRM/donor management software preferred.

Work Environment and Compensation
This position is based at Open Door’s administrative office in Lubbock, TX, but it is not a desk-bound role. The Development Director will spend significant time in the community meeting with current and prospective donors, building relationships, and representing Open Door at events and speaking engagements. Frequent local travel throughout Lubbock and occasional travel in the surrounding area may be required. Flexibility for occasional remote work is available when appropriate.
